Piers Morgan has joined the huge crowd of people marvelling over Emma Raducanu’s performances at the US Open, after criticising her for pulling out of Wimbledon earlier this summer. The controversial former Good Morning Britain presenter has been widely mocked on social media as a result of his U-turn.

Britain’s teenage tennis sensation has reached the semi-finals in New York, in what is just her second-ever major tournament after making her Grand Slam debut at the All England Club in June.

By beating Olympic champion Belinda Bencic in the last eight, she became the first woman ever to reach this stage of the competition as a qualifier, and is one of two teens left in the draw alongside Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.

Her achievements at Flushing Meadows have outshone what she managed to do at Wimbledon, when she made an unlikely run to the second week before retiring from her fourth round clash while losing to Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia.

The 18-year-old was criticised by Morgan after pulling out of that match because she was suffering breathing difficulties on the court.

“Ms Raducanu’s a talented player but couldn’t handle the pressure and quit when she was losing badly. Not ‘brave’, just a shame,” he said on social media, incurring the wrath of many followers.

But he now appears to have changed his tune about Raducanu following her incredible run at the US Open.

As well as posting a photo showing he was following her match against Bencic live, Morgan gushed: “She’s on fire again… destroying another far higher ranked player in the US Open.

“Emma Raducanu is the real deal – a tennis superstar in the making. So exciting to watch.”

He later went on to claim the the teen had concurred with his original comments about the manner of her Wimbledon exit.

“To be fair to Emma Raducanu, she totally agreed with me and [John] McEnroe that she didn’t handle the pressure at Wimbledon,” Morgan said.

“No whining, no excuses. Brilliant to see her storm back better and mentally stronger – that’s what champions do.”

His comments drew more derision from Twitter users, who felt the former newspaper editor was “jumping on the bandwagon”.

“Will you be claiming credit again if she wins this match?” asked one commenter sarcastically.

Another said: “Hopefully she’ll win without becoming ill so that you can’t try destroying her again.

“Emma will be great but without and hollow endorsement from you,” a third added.

In response to the criticism, Morgan said: “Very disappointing to see wokies going crazy because Emma Raducanu is now winning not quitting.

“This must be so triggering to losers who are used to you celebrating their failures. Please stop.”
