Serena Williams has withdrawn from the upcoming US Open. The 23-time Grand Slam champion announced the news on her Instagram on Wednesday (August 25), citing the torn hamstring injury she picked up at Wimbledon as the reason for her withdrawal.

Serena Williams had not played since she was forced to retire from her opening round match at Wimbledon after just six games.

The former world No 1 slipped on the grass shortly after Adrian Mannarino was forced to retire from his first-round clash against Roger Federer after doing the same.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion attempted to continue playing but retired at 3-3, handing Aliaksandra Sasnovich the victory.

Williams skipped the Olympics, something she was planning regardless as she refused to travel without her daughter, and was then forced to pull out of the US Open warm-up events in Montreal and Cincinnati, promising she would be back on court “very soon”.

The current world No 22 has now announced she has withdrawn from the US Open following medical advice.

Taking to Instagram, she posted a statement saying: “After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring.

“New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favourite places to play – I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone on from afar.

“Thank you for your continued support and love. I’ll see you soon.”
