Jockey Jye McNeil spent Tuesday night celebrating his Melbourne Cup triumph with his partner and support team.
McNeil won the Melbourne Cup on Twilight Payment in his first ride in the $8 million race and couldn’t wait to share the moment with his partner Jess Payne.
“We had a few drinks to celebrate with Jess, a few close friends and my manager,” McNeil said.
“I caught up with the owners a little bit later on so it was a fantastic way to do it.
“That moment where I got to see her and speak to her after winning the Cup was very overwhelming.”
Twilight Payment led almost all the way to win Victorian racing’s ultimate prize. McNeil said he thought the Joseph O’Brien-trained stayer had his rivals beaten at the 200m.
“I knew inside the 200m he was doing enough to hold on then I just really enjoyed the moment,” he said.

Empty stands greeted McNeil’s Cup triumph, which precluded any chance of a huge Glen Boss-style victory salute as Twilight Payment crossed the line.
I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know whether to celebrate or sit still and enjoy the moment,” McNeil said.
“In the end I gave a little a little fist pump and gave the horse a big pat.
“There was no crowd to salute to so I just tried to find a happy medium.”
McNeil added the magnitude of his Melbourne Cup win still hadn’t properly sunk in but it would over the coming days.
“It’s very hard to believe and something that I haven’t fully come to terms with yet but I’m very appreciative of it,” he said.
McNeil will ride Yatton in Thursday’s VRC Oaks before returning to Flemington on Saturday for seven rides.
McNeil’s Flemington book includes the ride on Tofane in the Group 1 Darley Sprint Classic (1200m) and on Melody Belle in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m).
