Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s position as Manchester United manager has taken another sharp downwards turn after Sunday’s humiliating 5-0 home defeat by Liverpool with reports saying that both Antonio Conte and Zinedine Zidane would be ‘prepared’ to talk on taking over at Old Trafford, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Solskjaer has been under increasing pressure for the majority of the season after a sharp dip in form in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

The Norwegian boss has overseen poor results such as the 2-1 loss to minnows Young Boys, whilst also enduring shock defeats to Aston Villa and West Ham in the League Cup.

The 4-2 loss last weekend to Leicester raised alarm bells, but it was the 5-0 lesson taught by the Reds which has got the wheels turning on fans calling for Solskjaer to be sacked.

It is reported that Antonio Conte is in the frame to become the next Red Devils manager with the club instantly needing someone to propel them up the table.

And with other reports that United chiefs are ready to sack Solskjaer for his poor run of form, that may well be in the offing.

The United Stand podcast featuring transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed that any manager who is currently on the market or unemployed would answer the phone to United.

“I think sometimes, from what I heard about managers available now on the market, if Man United are calling, these managers are prepared to hear,” the Sky Italy journalist said.

“For example Antonio Conte, let’s see if it will be Conte or not. I’m not saying Conte will be the new manager but he would be prepared to talk with Manchester United about the project.

“Also to try something new for him, because he never wanted to jump into a job during the season, but now he would be prepared to talk with Man United.

“It’s Man United, you don’t need two or three weeks to do this process.

“It is about understanding whether the board are convinced to continue with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and protecting him in the most difficult period of his career, or pinning the blame on the players, too.”

Conte appears to be the strong favourite to take the hot seat at Old Trafford.

However, other managers who have been linked with United in the past are also unemployed at the moment – namely Zidane.

The Frenchman managed Real Madrid for a combined total of five years from 2016-2021, having taken 10 months out from May 2018 to March 2019.

And having been linked with United before, there could be an opportunity for Zidane to reunite with Cristiano Ronaldo, with the pair winning three consecutive Champions League titles and two La Liga titles together in their time at the club.

Ronaldo has scored six goals in 10 games for United since his return in the summer.

And if he was to link up with Zidane – the manager he was most successful under – Ronaldo may be able to rediscover the kind of form which won him multiple Ballon d’Ors during his time at the Bernabeu.
