West Ham to sign £30m Nayef Aguerd imminently before focusing on two positions

West Ham are close to signing defender Nayef Aguerd from Rennes in a £30million transfer.

The 26-year-old posted an emotional farewell to fans of the Ligue 1 club on social media on Saturday. His lengthy message stated: “I announce that I played my last match [for Rennes] despite it being a difficult decision”.

It came as welcome news for West Ham, with manager David Moyes having identified the centre-back as the next vital piece to make the Irons top-six contenders. And the Moroccan has now expected undertaken his medical with the Hammers ahead of his official announcement on Monday.

The deal would make Aguerd West Ham’s fourth most expensive ever signing behind Sebastien Haller, Felipe Anderson and Kurt Zouma. Aguerd, who joined Rennes in 2020 from Dijon, is a fully fledged international for Morocco with 25 caps.

He played an important role in their journey to the last eight of the Africa Cup of Nations last season and featured in both play-off matches against Congo as they secured World Cup qualification.

His arrival in east London comes despite Newcastle reportedly being ready to hijack the move earlier this week. It was claimed that late interest from the Magpies had put the move into doubt, with Aguerd unable to make his mind up on who to join.

But the 6ft 2in defender is now understood to have made a decision, having been extensively scouted by West Ham’s head of recruitment Rob Newman. The Hammers are expected to focus on signing a new forward and an additional left-back once the Moroccan is officially signed.
