Virgil van Dijk has slammed his own 'awful' Netherlands side after blowing a golden chance to secure World Cup qualification.

The Dutch were held to a 2-2 draw at Montenegro but looked all set to qualify in style after taking a two goal lead.

Barcelona striker Memphis Depay gave the visitors a healthy advantage with a double.

But Van Dijk and his teammates were left to rue a woeful second half that left their World Cup hopes firmly in the balance.

Louis Van Gaal's side capitulated to concede two goals in the final ten minutes and relinquish their lead.

Ilija Vukotic halved the deficit before Nikola Vujnovic headed in the equaliser late on.

Liverpool star Van Dijk was incensed with the team's lack of organisation after the break.

"The way we played in the second half was just outrageous," Van Dijk told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

"We always want to have the ball, we all want to play football, attack and score. But football is also knowing how to defend.

"That's what we haven't done tonight. Our organisation was just awful. We should have qualified here."

"With all due respect to Montenegro, we should have won, certainly after taking a two-goal lead," added Van Dijk.

"Now we will play against Norway on Tuesday in an empty stadium (due to Covid-19 restrictions).

"We must be much better than tonight."

The Netherlands are still favourites to seal their place in Qatar next winter but now face a tough test away to Norway.

A draw will be enough for qualification but there is also the daunting prospect of missing out entirely should they lose on Tuesday.

If the Netherlands lose to Norway and Turkey also beat Montenegro, both sides will leapfrog them and their World Cup dreams would be left in tatters.
