US soccer legend found passed out with twin sons in car admits drink driving

USA soccer legend Hope Solo has admitted to drink driving after she was found passed out with her twin sons in her car.

The retired goalkeeper pleaded guilty to driving while impaired on Monday and has said she is "slowly coming back" after undergoing an in-patient alcohol treatment programme since her arrest. Solo was arrested by police back in March after being found unconscious in her car in a North Carolina shopping centre parking lot, with the engine running and her twin two-year-old sons in the backseat.

In a statement, Solo explained, via the BBC: "It's been a long road but I'm slowly coming back. I pride myself in motherhood and what my husband and I have done day in and day out for over two years throughout the pandemic with two-year old twins.

"While I'm proud of us, it was incredibly hard and I made a huge mistake – easily the worst mistake of my life. I underestimated what a destructive part of my life alcohol had become.

"The upside of making a mistake this big is that the hard lessons are learned quickly. Learning these lessons has been difficult and, and at times, very painful."

Marca report Solo received a 24-month suspended prison sentence and a 30-day active jail sentence as punishment for her actions. The 40-year-old did earn 30 day's worth of credit by visiting a rehabilitation centre, though, and has also been fined $2,500 and told to pay a $600 fee for the cost of the lab tests.

Solo retired in 2016 after a career which spanned 17 years and saw her play in the USA, Sweden and France. Capped 202 times by the USA, Solo twice won Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012.

She was also a member of the side which won the World Cup in 2015, with Solo winning the Golden Glove and being named in the tournament's All-Star Team.
