Tottenham are preparing to launch a move for Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar after being handed a boost by Arsenal’s impending capture of Martin Odegaard, according to reports. The Gunners are poised to make the 22-year-old their fourth summer signing on a permanent basis following his successful loan spell during the second half of last season.
Odegaard is expected to sign a five-year deal at the Emirates Stadium to keep him at the club until the summer of 2026.
Arsenal have reportedly agreed a fee in the region of £30million with Real Madrid, who had been stalling over the midfielder’s future for some time.
However, the Spanish giants have finally decided to part ways with Odegaard, inadvertently helping Spurs to progress their own search for a new creative outlet in the process.
Arsenal have been long-term admirers of Aouar and were heavily linked with his services last year, but the Frenchman ultimately stayed at Lyon.
He is now believed to be available for a cut-price fee, with the Ligue 1 heavyweights reportedly deeming him surplus to requirements.

Spurs have also been credited with an interest in Aouar and Odegaard’s switch to Arsenal suggests that the former is no longer a target for Mikel Arteta.
The situation leaves the door open for Spurs to pursue a move for the Lyon midfielder, with the club expected to mount a formal approach before this month’s transfer deadline, according to The Mirror.
Aouar remains highly-rated by a number of Premier League clubs despite being placed on Lyon’s transfer list by sporting director Juninho.
However, the report claims that Spurs are looking to nip ahead of the competition and secure his signature over the coming weeks.
Club chiefs have reportedly been in contact with Aouar’s representatives in order to explore the possibility of a move to the white side of north London.
It remains to be seen whether Daniel Levy will be able to bring the playmaker, who has played every minute of the new season for Lyon, to Spurs before the window slams shut.
The club have already negotiated the signings of Bryan Gil, Pierluigi Gollini and Cristian Romero since the end of the previous campaign.
Meanwhile, former England striker Kevin Phillips recently suggested that Spurs could end up landing Aouar ahead of Arsenal this summer.
“Any player you try to sign from France, you have that benefit of being a Premier League club,” said Phillips.
“If you can get him for that kind of money, just go and do it. It’s as simple as that. If you have the chance to get one over on Arsenal then it’s a good bit of business.
“I can see it. Nuno knows what he’s doing and that’s important. He will know how he wants his Tottenham team to play.
“If he can get those signings in then you will see a different style of play at the start of the season.”
