Manchester United ‘have Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves on a back-up list of midfield transfer targets if their £70m deal to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona falls through’
- Manchester United have been in talks over Frenkie de Jong for two months
- The deal has stalled due to issues at Barcelona and reluctance from De Jong
- If he does not join the Red Devils, they have ‘lined up potential back-up options’
Manchester United have put together a ‘back-up list’ of midfielders in case they are unable to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.
The Red Devils are reportedly looking to bring in an an established Premier League star if the deal with Barca falls through, with Ruben Neves and Youri Tielemans their targets.
It had seemed that De Jong was almost certain to join United, but recent developments have made the move less likely, with the Dutchman unlikely to leave while Barca owe him £17million in wages.
Man United will look at Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves if they can’t sign Frenkie de Jong
Frenkie de Jong is thought to be settled at Barca and wants to play in the Champions League
De Jong is also thought to be happier at the prospect of staying in Spain than moving to Old Trafford, as he is settled in Barcelona and his side will play Champions League football next season.
The Spanish giants may not want to keep him, though, as shifting players could free up money to sign Bernardo Silva, a player Barca have been looking at signing for 12 months.
According to reports in talkSPORT, United have put together a ‘back-up list’ of alternatives after two months of negotiations over De Jong.
The list is said to include Wolves star Neves, who has been linked with United for some time, and Leicester’s Tielemans.
Erik ten Hag’s side will be desperate to bring in another central midfielder before the start of next season after losing Paul Pogba this summer.
They have already agreed a deal with Christian Eriksen as a more attacking option, and Tyrell Malacia looks a shrewd acquisition at full back.
There are other areas of concern though, with questions over Cristiano Ronaldo’s future meaning they may be in need of a striker at short notice.
United will need to sort their team out fast if they are to fight their way back into the Champions League next season, especially after their rivals for the fourth-place spot have had busy transfer windows.
