Thomas Partey ‘agrees’ four-year Arsenal contract as Edu gets deadline day transfer boost

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey has reportedly agreed a four-year contract with Arsenal and is set to join the Gunners before tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline, so long as his £45million release clause is met.

Mikel Arteta has been chasing a new midfielder all summer and he looks to have finally landed his man.

Technical director Edu has been working tirelessly to grant the manager’s wishes and they received a big boost this afternoon.

After missing out on Lyon star Houssem Aouar, the Gunners reignited their interest in Partey.

Atletico do not want to sell the Ghana international but they are powerless to stop his £45m release clause being triggered.

Arsenal have not yet put their money on the table but they are expected to do so over the coming hours.

The Guardian claims Partey will move to north London on a four-year deal worth £250,000-a-week – which is quadruple what earns in the Spanish capital.

Arsenal hero Paul Merson is impressed with the business his former side have done during this window.

And he thinks the impending arrival of Partey is another fantastic coup.

“I think he’s a top, top player,” Merson told Sky Sports News. “I almost fell off my chair for £45m – I don’t think that’s a lot of money at all for the quality of player you’re getting in.

“The one thing he brings as well is discipline. He’s played at Atletico Madrid, who are the most disciplined team in Europe.

“He’s not a midfielder who goes running all over the place and think where has he gone, he’s very disciplined, plays in a disciplined team.

“I think he’d be a great signing. I love what Arteta is doing, trying to get rid of the players that aren’t involved, don’t want them hanging around. Fair play.”

He added: “There’s an identity with Arsenal, you know what they’re trying to do.

“I think they overplay a bit too much, but when you get someone like Partey in and Ceballos, I like what they’re doing.

“I think Arteta’s very good, and I’m gonna say it, I think Man City are missing Arteta.”
