Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has insisted his side are unlikely to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title despite their 3-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday. The Red Devils battled their way to victory over the Gunners with Antony on target and Marcus Rashford scoring twice. And that result means they’re now just three points behind their north London rivals at the top of the table.

Manchester United entered their contest with Arsenal on a high after recent victories over Leicester, Southampton and Liverpool.

They went ahead in the first half through Antony, who coolly slotted past Aaron Ramsdale after being put through by Marcus Rashford.

Bukayo Saka drew the visitors level, with the England international slotting the ball into the net despite the best efforts from Lisandro Martinez to block it.

Yet United weren’t to be denied and claimed all three points courtesy of a late brace from Rashford, who is starting to get back to his best.

With the Red Devils now just three points behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, fans are beginning to dream of title glory.

However, Ten Hag has insisted United aren’t capable of winning that prize just yet – insisting they’re merely at the start of their process.

He said: “I understand fans are dreaming, the standards of Manchester United has to be good, we’re at the start of a process, we’re still far away.

“We have to get doing things much better than we do, that’s an investment, we have to do that way together every day, we have to get better if you want to win trophies in the end.”

Ten Hag praised United for the way they started the showdown, too, while also recognising the team spirit that was on display at Old Trafford.

“I thought our start was really good,” he said. “I think it was the best [first] ten minutes until now.

“We were really dominant in the opponents’ half. And then the cancelled goal from a little break, we had a little bit of losing composure and that’s not necessary.

“We have to get in the game, keep going, play our game and everyday we learn that.

“And as you saw, there was a good team on the pitch, good team spirit. Also with pressing, maybe not always the good routines, but they [the players] fought, they recovered.

“Arsenal created chances, but I think we also did, especially on the break. We scored great goals.”

When asked if he was worried about Arsenal’s threat at any point in the showdown, he added: “Yes [but] worried is a big word.

“I know our defending line can deal with that. But I know they have a lot of creativity, and I say they have good routines.

“But we could have done things better. We are not as long together as Arsenal is. And when we get that in, we will be even more comfortable in the game and that is what we have to work for.

“And that is hard work. So, still a lot of room for improvement.”

Ten Hag proceeded to hail Antony as well, with the former Ajax star now off the mark at the first time of asking.

“I think we have already seen what a threat he is,” he said. “Speed and creativity are a real threat in the Premier League.

Opinion: The Glazers have five reasons to sell Man Utd

“And he is a part of it.

“And I think we missed a player on the right wing because all the players that can play there like Jadon Sancho, like Marcus Rashford, prefer more the centre or the left side.

“Now, we have the one who can play really good over the right wing, so there was a missing link.

“Now, today’s first performance here, he did well, but he can step up. I know him from Amsterdam. I know this is a different league, but there is potential and he will get that.

“He will be even better than he was today. But I would say today already, it was a great goal. Although, I must mention all the goals today were team goals.”
