Ten Hag could bring back forgotten Man Utd star who has not played in two years

Manchester United outcast Andreas Pereira is set to be handed an Old Trafford lifeline by Erik ten Hag.

After falling out of favour at United, Pereira has been farmed out on loan for the last two years. However, the 26-year-old has struggled for regular action with Flamengo, who could decide to send the flop back to the Premier League at the end of the season rather splashing out £12million on a permanent deal.

But if a full-time switch to Brazil does break down, then Pereira could be handed an unexpected reprieve by Ten Hag as the Dutchman prepares to take over at Carrington. According to a new report from ESPN, Ten Hag has informed United's football director John Murtough that he would be 'keen' to work with Pereira if he doesn't leave the club for good in the summer; a message that Murtough has passed on to the Brazilian.

Ten Hag and Pereira worked together at PSV Eindhoven in the early days of the midfielder's youth career before he was lured to Old Trafford. Pereira will have just one year left on his deal in the summer and could yet play has way into Ten Hag's plans if the opportunity arises.

Pereira isn't the only United midfielder who could be given a second chance at United by Ten Hag, with former Ajax star Donny van de Beek expected to be reintegrated into the first-team fold.

The 25-year-old was a key performer for Ten Hag during his time in Amsterdam, but has found himself sidelined in the Premier League since he joined United. He was offloaded to Everton on loan in the final hours of the January transfer window, but Ten Hag's arrival should see Van De Beek given the opportunity to kickstart his career in Manchester.

While Pereira and Van De Beek could be part of a new-look midfielder for the Red Devils next season, the club are expected to bring in some fresh faces too. Nemanja Matic has already confirmed he plans to quit Old Trafford in the summer, while it's looking increasingly likely that club-record flop Paul Pogba has already kicked his final ball for United – despite the midfielder insisting his season isn't over.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick insisted that Pogba wouldn't play again this season after picking up a calf injury when United mauled by Liverpool last week. However, the Frenchman fired back on social media -midway through United's defeat to Arsenal on Saturday – and refused to rule out a return to action.

Pogba posted: "Absolutely gutted to not be able to help the team in today's game. I will work even harder to come back stronger and hopefully before the end of the season. It's not over. Thank you all for your support, United we stand!"
