Stan Collymore believes that Manchester United need to sign upgrades on both Scott McTominay and Fred in the summer.
The former Liverpool and Newcastle striker has told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he will only get the best out of Bruno Fernandes by handing him support in the form of some more accomplished defensive midfielders.
The Portugal international has hit the ground running at Old Trafford with a goal and two assists in his first three Premier League outings, but Collymore thinks he won’t be able to improve further unless he is given more freedom.
Both McTominay and Fred have impressed this season in the absence of Paul Pogba, with Solskjaer keen to hand more chances to younger players rather than the likes of Nemanja Matic.

“Bruno Fernandes looks a top-quality player and exactly what Manchester United need,” Collymore wrote in his column for The Mirror.
“But Ed Woodward and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must now add an upgrade on Scott McTominay and Fred in the defensive midfield who will allow him to go and play and be as creative as he can be.
“I know we’ve criticised United’s recruitment team in the past and the nagging question over the signing of Fernandes is: Why didn’t the get him in last summer?
“Because who knows what he might have done in the last six or seven months with a full pre-season.”

McTominay, 23, returned to action against Watford after a period of almost two months on the sidelines with a knee injury.
Despite that positive step, Solskjaer has warned supporters not to expect a swift return to the starting XI.
The Norwegian said: said: "Scott's recovered really quickly. He’s been doing everything to get back and he’s looking stronger and quicker.
"He wanted to play today but we need to manage him properly."

He added: “I’m not surprised [he’s back so soon] because that’s the type he is.
“He’s a physical specimen, he’s a leader. He never shirks a tackle and he brings everyone with him.
"He can sit with Nemanja [Matic] and Fred or he could be one of the runners in midfield.
“Talking about that here today, we don’t really make enough runs past the striker. Scott used to be a striker so he’s used to being in the box.”
