Sir Alex threatened to drop Man Utd’s legends after Robin van Persie signed

Manchester United hero Robin van Persie once revealed how Sir Alex Ferguson threatened to drop his star players if they could not bring the best out of the Dutchman.

Van Persie signed for the Red Devils in 2012 as one of the greatest strikers in the world, coming off the back of a sensational season for Arsenal where he scored 30 league goals.

The forward quickly became one of Sir Alex’s standout players at United and guided the club to their last Premier League title in the Scot’s final season in charge.

And while working as a pundit on BT Sport last year, van Persie revealed just how serious the manager was about making him the focal point of the attack.

Van Persie said: “He literally said to Scholesy, Carrick, Shinji [Kagawa] and Wayne [Rooney], ‘if you cannot find him, you will not play.’”

Fellow club icon Rio Ferdinand, who won six league titles under Ferguson, also noted the importance of the manager’s words in United winning the league.

Ferdinand said: “[Ferguson told us] ‘he’s going to win you the league if you pass him the ball.’

“And if you fast forward the season, one of the standout moments of that season, Wayne Rooney gets the ball, plays a 30-yard ball into him, he volleys it into the back of the net against Aston Villa and we win the league.

“If that conversation doesn’t happen in that office, there’s a chance that goal might not get scored because Wayne night not look for that run.”

Man United have failed to mount a successful title challenge in the years following Sir Alex’s departure, having missed the Scot’s renowned man-management and straight-talking ability

Current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a number of stars such as Jadon Sancho, Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo at his disposal, but has not yet been able to find a way of making them gel together.

Ronaldo is currently the player shouldering the most van Persie-esque responsibility in the side, with his penchant for late goals already taking his tally up to six goals for the season.

But Solskjaer has been criticised by pundits like Jamie Carragher for his inability to get the best out of his players, which van Persie’s anecdote highlighted.

United currently sit sixth in the league despite splashing over £100million on big players this summer and face a tough challenge against Liverpool on Sunday.
