Shearer claims Kane 'would score as many goals' as Haaland at Man City

Alan Shearer claims Harry Kane ‘would score as many goals’ as Erling Haaland if Man City had signed the Tottenham star last season… as he insists any top class striker should net 40 goals a season for Pep Guardiola’s side

  • Erling Haaland has scored 20 goals in 13 appearances for Manchester City
  • Harry Kane meanwhile has netted nine times in 13 games for Tottenham
  • Alan Shearer feels Kane would score just as many as Haaland for Man City

Erling Haaland might be having an incredible season, but Alan Shearer feels Harry Kane would be scoring just as many goals if he had joined Manchester City last season.

Kane had hoped to join Pep Guardiola’s side last year, only for Tottenham’s £150million valuation of their star man to price City out of a move.

Instead, City waited a year and signed Haaland for a bargain £51m from Borussia Dortmund, with the Norwegian already scoring 20 goals in 13 appearances.

Erling Haaland has scored an incredible 20 goals in 13 appearances so far this season

Record Premier League goalscorer, Shearer, feels City would be benefitting just as much if they had the England captain in their squad.

He told the Athletic: ‘It could all have been very different if Pep Guardiola got his way last season and they’d signed Harry Kane. There might not have been room for Haaland and he may have been carrying out these incredible goalscoring feats somewhere else.

‘But if Harry was in this City team, he would be scoring as many goals as Erling has.

‘This is dreamland for any top forward. I’ve said it all along — a top goalscorer in this City team should score 40 goals. If Erling stays fit then he’ll get that and maybe even some more.

‘Harry’s record tells you that he would do that, too. There’s no doubt what Pep thinks about Harry and what the vast majority of other people think about him as well.

‘He is a top goalscorer: he’s got eight in nine league games so far, which we’d be talking about a lot more if it wasn’t for Erling.’

Shearer also paid special tribute to Kevin De Bruyne, describing him as a striker’s ‘dream’, while adding other players like Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez can drop-in deep to help City’s centre-forward.

Shearer says any top striker – including himself – would score 40 goals a season for Man City

Haaland at his current rate could beat Shearer’s Premier League record in five years

The Newcastle legend, who has scored 260 Premier League goals, says he would be confident of getting 40 goals a season if he played today for City.

Kane has enjoyed a fruitful season in front of goal and is second in the list of top scorers – though his eight is just under half of Haaland’s 15.

He is also third on the all-time Premier League scorer’s list with 191 – 17 behind Wayne Rooney.

Sportsmail reported earlier this month that Haaland could beat Shearer’s Premier League record in five years if he continues at his current scoring rate.
