Sergio Aguero shown playing football for first time since retirement

Footage emerges of Sergio Aguero playing football for the first time since announcing his retirement after being diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia… as the ex-Barcelona and Man City star delights fans in a five-a-side match in Miami

  • Sergio Aguero was forced to retire from professional football in December
  • The Argentinian had joined Barcelona from Manchester City that summer
  • His doctor found a scar near his heart from a previous cardiac issue
  • First footage of the retired striker playing football emerges online to much fanfare

Footage has emerged of Sergio Aguero playing football for the first time since his December retirement from the game owing to a heart arrhythmia.

Aguero was forced off after only 42 minutes late last October in a game for Barcelona against Alaves when he reported chest pains.

After tests, it was revealed that Aguero had a small scar near to his heart that was causing the heart arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat, that was a result of a previous cardiac issue suffered by the legendary Manchester City striker.

Sergio Aguero has waved goodbye to football after retiring due to heart problems aged 33

Roberto Peidro, an Argentine cardiologist, said of the issues suffered by Aguero: ‘He has a very small scar in his heart area which is less than a millimetre which is why it sort of short-circuits and causes those arrhythmias.

‘What was done using a catheter was to burn that area where the arrhythmias were coming out.

‘We think it’s going to work very well and solve the problem but our advice is that he shouldn’t do high-performance sport that involves an important degree of mental and physical stress several hours a day.’

Sergio Aguero’s most notable moment of his career came with the practically last kick of the 2011-12 season

The Argentine picked up his only Premier League Golden Boot award in the 2014-15 season

Peidro, who began treating Aguero when he was a young player at Independiente in Argentina, said he could continue to live a normal life and play sport but professional football was not a normal life.

‘He can do sport and he’s going to have a normal life like any normal person. But footballers live a different type of life,’ he said.

Happily for the former player and those close to him, he has been able to get back on the pitch, although not in the full capacity that he would like.

The Argentine scored 420 goals in 764 career games, including a record 260 for Man City

Footage circulating on social media shows Manchester City’s all-time leading goal scorer playing five-a-side in Miami against River Plate fans.

Aguero, who is donning a Barcelona strip, toyed with those he is playing against, showing them that despite his retirement, he still possesses the skills that made him one of the most revered players in the game.

The footage showed Aguero unleashing one of his trademark drives with his right foot before he embarked on a mazy run that saw him beat a number of his opposition players.

The final goal of Aguero’s (right) career came in the El Clasico defeat to Real Madrid in October

Despite appearing to be walking for much of the game, the River Plate supporters do not seem to be able to get close to Aguero who produced a number of lovely touches and finishes.

His strikers instinct was displayed by him latching onto a stray back-pass and dinking the ball over the ‘keeper.

Meanwhile, fans on social media expressed their delight at seeing the Argentine back on the pitch.

‘Sir Aguero back doing what he does best. A sight for sore eyes,’ one wrote.

Another wrote: ‘Sergio Aguero playing football The best thing you’ll see today.’
