Partick Thistle have unveiled a new special edition kit inspired their iconic mascot Kingsley – widely considered the ‘scariest mascot ever’.

Ahead of the 2022/23 season, the Scottish Premiership team released what some might consider a unique-looking design featuring the cartoon figure. Some had been worried amid rumours that Kingsley would be printed be on the home jersey.

Luckily those rumours were put to bed and instead the mascot will be on the special edition design instead. A tweet from the club read: “It's OFFICIAL! Our [email protected] and @ONeills1918 will produce a run of Kingsley kits, including children's sizes, for sale later this year. The skipper @RossDocherty1 loves wearing his – you'll be able to purchase yours soon. Watch this space!'

The shirt has Kingsley over the entire bottom half of the jersey, laid just underneath the chest sponsor. While the colours include the club’s red and yellow stripes on the top half. Social media users have been lapping up the new design. One wrote: “WTF is this? If I play for this club, i'd rescind my contract the moment they unveiled this.” Another tweeted: “Like it was not enough to have a hideous mascot.”

A third stated: “The ugliest kit I’ve ever seen.” A fourth commented: “Kingsley needs to be euthanized.! The club provides Kingsley with his own page on their official site, where you can read an open letter by him.

It reads: “Hello, I’m Kingsley. In June 2015 I moved to Glasgow, from sunny California, to become Partick Thistle’s mascot – you might remember, it was kind of a big deal. There were a lot of mean things said about me when I first appeared, but I’m not too concerned because I know it’s what’s on the inside that counts. I’m a nice guy really – just a bit misunderstood – and I hope all the Junior Jags will be looking forward to sharing cuddles and high fives with me all throughout the season.

“I might look a bit angry but I’m really very approachable and I love Partick Thistle. So don’t be scared to come and say hello if you see me out and about.”

Kingsley was designed by artist David Shrigley and unveiled on 22 June 2015 to coincide with the side’s new sponsorship – American investment firm Kingsford Capital Management.
