Cristiano Ronaldo'sManchester United return looks set to be foiled by ex-Old Trafford boss Jose Mourinho, who wants the striker to join him at Serie A club AS Roma.

That's according to ex Juventus, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid forward Christian Vieri who believes that despite their previous differences, the special one wants a Portuguese reunion at I Giallorossi.

The pair previously worked together at Real Madrid where the Portuguese duo won La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and the Supercopa De Espana.

During Mourinho's' brief three-year spell at the Bernabeu, fallouts between Ronaldo and Mourinho were a frequent event.

The duo clashed over tactical approaches with Mourinho's ultra-defensive style contradicting Ronaldo's belief that Real should be setting up with greater attacking intent.

Speaking to Bobo TV, Vieri said: "Mourinho wants to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to Roma."

After taking over from Paulo Fonseca, Mourinho is looking to rebuild a Roma side who finished seventh in Serie A last season.

The former Tottenham gaffer is in need of serious reinforcements and Ronaldo reportedly tops the list following a disappointing season in Turin where Juventus narrowly scraped Champions League football on the final day of the season.

Despite Vieri's claims that Mourinho is targeting a move for the four time Ballon d'or winner, his colleague at Bobo TV Antonio Cassano strongly disagreed:

""Ronaldo to Roma? That's nonsense," said the ex-Inter Milan and Roma striker.

"Mourinho didn't get on well with Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid. How can you think he's going to go to Roma?

"I don't know if it's because they have the same agent, Jorge Mendes, or a Portuguese sporting director, but how can you think Cristiano's going to Roma?"
