Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand was impressed by the work ethic of Romelu Lukaku after the pair met, and said the striker is destined for success in the Premier League.

The Chelsea striker scored four goals in four appearances since he returned to Stamford Bridge, including a goal against Zenit St. Petersburg on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old headed past Russian goalkeeper Stanislav Kritsyuk in the 69th minute, capitalising on one of the very few half-chances he had over the course of 90minutes.

The £97.5m summer signing has given the Blues a cutting edge in the final third and many believe Lukaku will give Thomas Tuchel’s side the firepower they need to win the league this season.

Praise has come for the former Everton forward from all angles, and on BT Sport on Tuesday night, United hero Ferdinand commented on how Lukaku has an unbelievable work ethic.

The ex-England defender said: “I filmed with him [Lukaku] the other day and he just wanted to talk about watching videos.

"I think it was on the Monday after he scored on his debut for Chelsea against Arsenal and I met him. He was watching videos of Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool and their chances created on that Monday, [he was saying] ‘I’ve already got videos, I’ve already got videos, what do you reckon about this?’ He’s just a sponge.”

Lukaku scored 24 in 36 Serie A appearances last season for Inter Milan, and if he can replicate such impressive figures in the English top-flight this campaign then he will be close to unstoppable for Chelsea.

The Belgium international has played in the Premier League for the majority of his career, joining Chelsea in 2011 before enjoying loan spells at West Brom and Everton, before making his move to the Toffees permanent in 2014.

Lukaku enjoyed four seasons overall at Goodison Park and caught the interest of United, but he failed to live up to expectations and was sold to Inter.

During his time in Italy, the Anderlecht academy product improved all elements of his game and came back a stronger, fitter striker.

Whether Lukaku can continue his good form and justify his almost triple-figure price tag remains to be seen, but, after Ferdinand’s comments, whatever happens, his attitude cannot be questioned.
