Rio Ferdinand was fuming at Manchester United’s defending for Demba Ba’s opener in their shock Champions League defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir. The loss has piled the pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with Saturday’s Premier League trip to Everton now taking on even greater importance.
United found themselves a goal down inside 12 minutes in Istanbul as former Chelsea striker Ba scored a shock opener against the run of play.
The goal gave the hosts confidence, and Edin Visca doubled the lead five minutes before half-time.
Anthony Martial pulled one back just before the break, but the Red Devils couldn’t find an equaliser in the second half despite Solskjaer throwing on Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba.
United were guilty of poor defending for both Istanbul’s goals, which were both scored on the counter-attack as the Turkish side picked up a first ever win in the Champions League proper.

But Ferdinand was particularly incensed by Ba’s opener, with the striker left unmarked following a spell of United pressure.
Ba’s chance came after he trotted towards the halfway line following a short United corner.
Defensive trio Axel Tuanzebe, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were all in Istanbul’s box as United tried to find an opening, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s low cross was blocked and the hosts regained possession.
At this point, every United player was within 35 yards of the home goal, with Nemanja Matic the last man.

But Ba had a 10-yard head start on Matic as a long ball was launched forwards to him, and the striker simply had to collect the ball, race towards Dean Henderson’s goal and slot past the Champions League debutant.
Former United defender Ferdinand couldn’t believe what he was seeing, and took to Twitter to share his ire.
Alongside a picture of Ba running unmarked as the ball was about to be launched towards him, Ferdinand blasted: “The goals against us….please tell me someone is going nuts in that changing room and people are being made accountable.

“The shape of the team when we lose the ball for the 1st goal.”
One of Ferdinand’s followers was quick to reply, saying: “Wait till you see the shape for the second…”
That tweet was posted alongside a picture of Visca shooting from the left of United’s penalty area, with none of Solskjaer’s players anywhere near him and three defenders stranded on the opposite side of the box.
United still top Group H following their defeat in Turkey, with six points after wins from their opening two games over PSG and RB Leipzig.
