Rio Ferdinand believes Ronaldo "needs team-mates to help" after Man Utd failure

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes Cristiano Ronaldo needs more help from his team-mates and the club as a whole as they have “not played their role”.

Real Madrid legend Ronaldo returned to the club amid a backdrop of huge excitement and hope that United could even challenge for the Premier League. Unfortunately the season has not even yielded a place in next season's Champions League, as United’s 1-0 away loss to Crystal Palace consigned them to a miserable sixth placed finish.

Nevertheless, Ronaldo did enjoy an impressive return to the Premier League, contributing 18 league goals and three assists in 30 appearances. And Ferdinand has laid down the gauntlet for his United team mates to chip in and help the Portuguese ace when Erik ten Hag begins his reign as United boss.

“On a personal level he has done what Ronaldo does – scores goals and win games,” Ferdinand said to JOE. “Without Ronaldo they do not get to the knockout phases of the Champions League, he’s scored winning goals multiple times and he’s lived up to his side of the bargain.

“I think the club has not played their role in terms of giving him the platform for success. It just shows you great players, including the best players in the conversation for the best players ever, you cannot do it alone.

“You need team-mates to help and this shows that,” he added. In all competitions, Ronaldo finished the season having found the net on more occasions than United’s next three top goal-scorers put together.

Only international compatriot Bruno Fernandes made it into double digits, chipping in with ten goals and 13 assists. Despite a backdrop of huge uncertainty, Ronaldo is expected to remain at the club when Ten Hag takes the Old Trafford hot-seat.

And Ferdinand believes both Ten Hag and Ronaldo will need time to learn about each other’s methods and styles. “We will have to wait and see, this is something that we need to wait for, give time,” Ferdinand added.

“He (Ten Hag) needs to be afforded that, given the resources and the patience to try and create something, because he almost has to create something almost from scratch.”
