Adelaide United have sold Riley McGree for an undisclosed fee to MLS expansion club Charlotte, with the star midfielder moving to the United States via a spell in England.
Vision of McGree’s “scorpion” goal in the A-League in 2018, when playing with Newcastle, went viral, and the rising star caught the attention of plenty of overseas suitors.
Two years later, after McGree kicked 10 goals and was named the A-League young player of the year this season, Charlotte decided to sign him.
But given the new club isn’t due to compete until 2022, the rising star will be immediately loaned out to English Championship club Birmingham City.
“For me, my goal has always been to push myself and my football and to have the chance to head overseas and to be doing that is very exciting,” said McGree, who turns 22 next month.
“Adelaide will always be my home and I wish the boys and the club the best for the future.”

McGree was named the Reds’ player of the season, with his haul of 10 goals and five assists also earning him the competition’s young footballer of the year award.
“Riley had an outstanding season last year and has been rightfully rewarded for his hard work and performances,” Adelaide United director of football Bruce Djite said.
“It is always difficult when one of the club’s best talents departs, and Riley will be very difficult to replace.
“However, when players have hunger and desire to play at the highest level – and they get that opportunity – we as a club will always look to support them.”
The Reds have also sold teenage striker Lachlan Brook to English Championship club Brentford for an undisclosed fee.
“Playing overseas, especially in Europe, has always been a personal ambition of mine, so this really is another dream come true for me and an incredible opportunity,” Brook said.
Brook, 19, played AFC Champions League football in 2017 and made 10 senior appearances overall for the Reds.
