PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino identifies Chelsea as the team to beat in Europe

Mauricio Pochettino has picked out Champions League holders Chelsea as the side to beat in the competition this season with his PSG team a close second.

The former Tottenham boss has welcomed Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Georginio Wijnaldum, Achraf Hakimi, Nuno Mendes and Lionel Messi to his playing squad this summer.

They join the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Marco Verratti and Angel Di Maria in trying to claim an elusive European crown – but there are is one opponent that Pochettino is wary of.

They come in the form of Thomas Tuchel's reigning champions, who added Romelu Lukaku to an already talented playing squad for £95.7m this summer.

ESPN report Pochettino saying: "It's possible that Chelsea and ourselves are the two teams to beat on paper, looking at our squads, but Chelsea are the holders so they're the team to beat especially after strengthening their squad.

"We're not a team yet. We are a club that has recruited many players this summer. There are some big names but we have to turn into a team.

"We know that we'll be judged at the end of the season on our results. The pressure is there for all the clubs and we know that for a number of years, the Champions League is PSG's main objective."

Tuchel said earlier this week when asked if Chelsea could be named as favourites: "You can do what you want!

"It will not change our approach. We came out of the shadows, nobody thought that we would be the winners in the end. Believe it or not, there are so, so many teams that can win it.

"You need luck, momentum, a good group. There are so many teams out there with a good group, a strong club, and good coaches.

"This competition is a very open competition and like you see in other sports anything is possible if you believe, have momentum, have luck. We had this.

"We had a strong bond. We were surprised to win it but not undeserved. This can happen to anybody.

"We start from scratch, with 0 points. Zenit come with 0 points, 0 goals. We all have the same chance. The target is to reach our own top level every single game.

"If we do this everything is possible, if we don’t we will not have a chance to compete in the Champions League."
