Mauricio Pochettino delighted fans of former club Tottenham after photos emerged of the Argentine among a range of Spurs icons at Osvaldo Ardiles’ 70th birthday party. Pochettino spent five successful years in north London before chairman Daniel Levy wielded the axe in 2019.

Although he failed to win a major trophy, Pochettino worked wonders during his stint at Spurs with top-three finishes in three consecutive seasons between 2016 and 2018. He also took them to the Champions League final in 2019 before losing to Liverpool and being dismissed just a few months later.

Many Tottenham fans still hold Pochettino in high regard for his loyalty to the club and years of exciting football spearheaded by Harry Kane and Heung-min Son. There had been talk of a return at the beginning of last season before Levy eventually turned to Nuno Espirito Santo, who didn’t last long in the dugout.

Pochettino sparked fresh optimism that he could, one day, return to north London with wholesome social media posts from Ardiles’ birthday celebrations.

In a two-part Instagram story, Pochettino was first pictured with his arms around club legends Ricardo Villa and Ardiles, captioned: “Celebrating life with legends.” The next post, with a larger group of Spurs veterans, was accompanied by the message “COYS! @Spursofficial.”

The final message understandably provoked a reaction from Spurs fans with fresh belief that their former boss could return to the club in some capacity further down the line.

“I think we all know Pochettino will 100 per cent be back at Spurs at some point,” wrote @Don_Falcone on Twitter. “Hopefully Conte stays for as long as possible, but I think deep down we all know Pochettino has unfinished business here and would love to manage Spurs again one day.”

Meanwhile, @spursmaca added: “The fact that the Legends love Mauricio Pochettino so much says everything about the man, doesn’t it. They don’t fawn over every Spurs manager we’ve had in the last 30 years.”

Pochettino’s last managerial post was an 18-month stint at Paris Saint-Germain which saw him sacked in July of this year.

Although he came in halfway through the campaign, his first season in charge at the Parc des Princes ended disappointingly as Lille pipped them to the Ligue 1 title by a point. Pochettino’s side scored 90 goals to win the league the following year, but it still wasn’t enough to save his job.

Current Spurs boss Antonio Conte is highly-regarded by fans but his contract, as it stands, is due to expire at the end of this campaign. The Lilywhites are third in the Premier League table, unbeaten after seven matches.
