Manchester United’s midfield is the area that needs addressing the most, according to former Red Devils striker Alan Brazil. United find themselves eight points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea after just nine games of the season. Their latest result was a demoralising 5-0 loss at home to rivals Liverpool.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent big in the summer on three major signings.
Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane boosted the attacking and defensive options for the Norwegian, while Cristiano Ronaldo was brought in on the last few days of the window.
But Solskjaer didn’t add any midfielders to his ranks, which Brazil thinks was a mistake.
The radio presenter is a fan of fellow Scot Scott McTominay but he does not think Fred is good enough to play for United.

Brazil reckons most of United’s problems would be solved if they had a stronger midfield.
“I still think they’re miles behind the top three,” Brazil told talkSPORT.
“Chelsea, Liverpool, [Manchester] City. I’m sorry, for me there’s still a big, big gap.

“Midfield’s not good enough for a start. I don’t really want to bring McTominay into it, I think McTominay’s a great sitter, he sits there in front of the back four, it was only several weeks ago where we were saying ‘he’s coming on, he’s got a bit of authority about him now, give me the ball, I won’t give it away’.
“He needs a hard working player alongside him and Fred is not the answer.
“With the greatest respect to Fred, he tries his hardest, he’s not good enough.
“Not to challenge the big three. So United need two or three players.
“Bruno [Fernandes]’s fantastic, you stick another two or three midfield, quality, in there, then up front United are fine, at the back you could argue but I think it’s because there is a weakness in the midfield that the back is getting exposed.
“The full-backs are alright, you’ve got the England centre-back, it’s just midfield is the problem.”
Meanwhile, United legend Bryan Robson has a similar opinion to Brazil that the club will struggle for success until they can be more resolute defensively.
“That solid base has got to be there,” Robson told talkSPORT.
“With the type of players we’ve got, we’re brilliant at counter-attacking in certain games.
“You’ve got to get that base right so you’re not giving goals away and encouraging the opposition on top of you.
“With people like [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial, [Mason] Greenwood – they’ve proved that they’re really good at counter-attacking. But you need that solid base.”
