Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Daniel James' confidence is at an all-time high after the Welsh winger scored again in Manchester United's 3-1 victory against Newcastle.
James was criticised by some for his performances in the second half of last season and at the beginning of the current campaign.
The 21-year-old has been on the fringes of the side at times, but has been heavily involved in recent weeks, and has now scored three times and created an assist in his last three appearances.
Speaking to BT Sport following the win against the Magpies, Solskjaer insisted James was always in his plans – and explained his recent upturn in form.
"He never disappeared," Solskjaer said. "He has been working hard behind the scenes and always been available.
"He is always a player you can use in different areas with his energy and pace. We work with him, we try to help everyone but of course Dan came from the Championship, he hit a few goals in the first games and it is bound to take some energy from you.
"He has knuckled down and really worked to get back to full fitness but maybe more so confidence, to believe in himself."
James himself admitted that he "lost his way" somewhat last season, but has bounced back due to hard work and analysing where things were going wrong.
"I think there was a moment last season that maybe I wasn’t performing as well as I wanted to," he told MUTV.
"I think this season I just wanted to reflect on that as much as I can, doing everything I can to reflect on my games, and yeah I’ve just been working on the training ground as hard as I can.
"I think I kind of lost my way a bit. I wasn’t playing the same as I did at the start of last season, so that’s what I had to look at, analysis, stuff like that.
"I’ve got the right people around me to talk me through that and, as I said, I've been working with coaches on the training ground to try and get me back to myself and I’d like to think that I’ve got there."
James will be hoping to be heavily involved for the end-of-season run-in as United attempt to push Manchester City all the way in the title race and target some silverware via either the Europa League or FA Cup.
