Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly told his former team-mate Gary Neville about his desire to sign a new defender this summer. United penned Eric Bailly down to a new contract on Tuesday but Solskjaer clearly wants to strengthen at the back in the next window.
Real Madrid star Raphael Varane is a reported top target for the Red Devils.
Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde have also been linked with moves to Old Trafford.
Solskjaer played alongside Neville throughout his 11 years as a player at United.
Neville has built a successful career in punditry while Solskjaer has focused more on the coaching side of the game.

But it appears the duo still remain close, with Duncan Castles of the Transfer Window podcast claiming Solskjaer has told Neville his wish for this summer.
Solskjaer wants to improve in the centre of defence and has told his old team-mate that.
Castles said: “I think what a lot of people who watch Manchester United want to see is that on top of having Bailly there, they go and sign another high-quality centre-back to improve their options in that area.
“It’s clear that it’s a weakness in the team, the weakness is fundamentally down to Harry Maguire, his lack of pace and issues positionally which forces the team to play very deep from the back.

“If you bring in a better centre-back, and Solskjaer has been asking for that, Solskjaer has been telling people he trusts in the media, such as Gary Neville, that he wants a higher-quality centre-back, a faster centre-back who’s good on the ball in.
“If they do that in tandem with Bailly, then certainly that is a plus for people like Bruno Fernandes who is looking for a better squad.
“The question is whether they do that now.”
Meanwhile, Bailly has been hampered with injury problems throughout his time at United so far.
But the Ivory Coast defender says he had no hesitation in signing a new deal.
“I’m very happy,” Bailly told United’s media channel. “This decision is something I didn’t have to think about, I love this club and I love playing for Manchester United.
“I’m happy and so are my family, everything is good. Now the moment with my injury has passed and I’m fit and feel good, and that’s it.
“A new contract is like a new challenge and I’m ready for this.
“The new contract shows the group has confidence in me – the coach, the staff and the players and, for me, that is very important.
“And that’s why I made this decision to stay at the club.”
