Martin Odegaard has proven why Mikel Arteta made him Arsenal captain with how he ensures new signings settle in at the club. Leandro Trossard has opened up on the welcome he received from the Norwegian midfielder following his January arrival.
Odegaard was appointed Arsenal skipper last summer following Alexandre Lacazette’s exit from the club. He had already been handed the responsibility of leading his country.
He had a good first full season at the Emirates, registering seven goals and four assists in the Premier League. But the armband has seen him take his game to the next level.
Odegaard may not be the most vocal captain and often will lead by example on the pitch. But Trossard has revealed the type of leadership he shows away from the cameras.

Trossard joined Arsenal from Brighton midway through the season. After three-and-a-half years on the south coast, he had already acclimatised to playing in the Premier League.
But any transfer for a player is daunting, especially during a campaign without the comfort of a pre-season period to get used to your surroundings. Trossard knew he had to hit the ground running straight away in a team that was flying high at the top of the table.
The Belgium international says Odegaard played a big part in ensuring he settled as quickly as possible. Asked who his closest friends at Arsenal are, Trossard told Sky Sports: “To be honest, Kieran [Tierney]. I’m quite close to him.
“Martin helped me a lot as well. He texted me the first day I arrived if there was anything he could help me with.

“Yeah it’s really nice, that’s what I said. More of the lads said it to be fair and it gives you that confidence that you can settle in quick and it helped me a lot.”
Odegaard first joined Arsenal on loan in January 2021 so knew what Trossard was going through following his move. His gesture towards Trossard cannot be measured in terms of how the new signing has since performed on the pitch.
But being happy at a new club is half the battle. Trossard has immediately felt at home and that can be seen with the way he has played.
Only Kevin De Bruyne and Bukayo Saka have more assists than Trossard in the Premier League this season. Only two of those assists came at Brighton, showing how well Trossard has done since he moved to London.
