Manchester United and other clubs interested in signing Erling Haaland have been urged to get a deal done this summer or risk losing out on him forever. Haaland is linked with a host of Europe’s top clubs after a stunning first full season at Borussia Dortmund. Ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash at Manchester City, Haaland had scored 49 goals in 50 games in all competitions for the German side since his arrival last January.

United have made Haaland a top target ahead of the summer window.

But the likes of City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona are also keen.

Dortmund want at least £128.8million (€150m) for Haaland this year before his release clause of around £64m (€75m) becomes active in the summer of 2022.

Former United and City midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes clubs should do all they can to sign the “generational” talent this summer because they will only face much stronger competition next year.

“He’s at a great club already but the problem is with how well he’s playing, he deserves to be at an even bigger club,” Hargreaves said.

“Whether it’s Barcelona or whether it’s Real Madrid, whether it’s City, whether it’s Chelsea.

“I think everybody’s going to want him but the question is can they afford him?

“And for the teams that can, they’re probably not wanting him to go [elsewhere]. If you’re Barca you don’t want him to go to Real.

“So teams will probably end up having to take out a loan because this guy is generational, you don’t want to lose him.

“If he goes to another team, you can guarantee with better service he’s going to score more goals. It’s almost like he’s been created to score goals.

“For him now he’s fortunate that he’s in a position where he’s going to pick the right spot.

“This isn’t going to be about money, this is going to be about ‘what’s the right fit for me in my development?’.

Former City centre-back Joleon Lescott agrees with Hargreaves that teams should go all out to sign Haaland before the “auction” starts next year once the release clause is active.

“If I had the money I’m blowing everyone else out of the water,” Lescott said.

“You’re not going to go into an auction next year when it’s capable for more teams to buy him.

“So if I had the opportunity to get him this season before the Euros, I would be looking to acquire him straight away.”
