When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought Bruno Fernandes to Manchester United in January, there were hopes he would hit the ground running in England.
But 31 goal involvements in 33 games for the club, may have came as a surprise to even the most optimistic United fan.
Since his arrival, Fernandes has become the main man at Old Trafford and one of the key reasons behind their return to Champions League football.
And the man that scouted him as a 17-year-old back in 2012, has admitted that his ascension to one of Europe’s best has come as a shock.
Mauro Borghetti signed Fernandes for Novara at the start of his career and has said that despite always having high hopes for the midfielder, his form at United is better than anyone could have anticipated.
"He has always raised the level in his career,” Borghetti told Football Italia.
“Sincerely, what Bruno Fernandes has become today is a bit of a surprise to me.
“We understood that he was not a common footballer but here we are talking about one who plays in one of the most famous club in the world with results out of any kind of logic.
“He had the potential to do it, but to see what he’s become today is a bit of a surprise."
He may be one of the Premier League’s best, but Borghetti has revealed the Portguese star still displays the same levels of humility that made him the player he is.

“Above all, he had a great personality which is what distinguishes him now that he is playing football at top levels,” Borghetti added.
“I sometimes write to him to ask if he can send some messages for the guys who play here at Novarello and he is always available.
“Sometimes I text him after a goal or a good performance. Today, I would tell him to always keep that humility that has always distinguished him, he hasn’t changed and he shows it every time he makes himself available to me and to other people who knew him at the time of Novarello.
“That’s what has made him a great champion.”
