Man Utd risk not finding a buyer for outcast Phil Jones with transfer price tag

Manchester United are ready to offload Phil Jones in January – but they want top dollar for the Old Trafford outcast.

The 28-year-old is surplus to requirements under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and is yet to feature at all so far this term.

Jones has been left out of United's 25-man squad for the Champions League and is expected to be axed from the club's Premier League squad also.

And the Sun report a bid of £20m will be enough to end the defender's Red Devils nightmare.

A host of Premier League sides have previously expressed an interest in Jones, including Scott Parker's Fulham.

Jones has a contract at United until 2023, hence why the club have stuck such a hefty price tag on his head.

Solskjaer's side extended the deal last year, with the former Blackburn man earning 100,000-a-week.

Jones could still make appearances in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

But Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe are ahead of the player in the pecking order.

United were urged to sign a centre-back this summer.

But Solskjaer felt he had enough at his disposal – and former right-back Rafael thinks the boss didn't want to panic buy.

Of course, we need some players but last season, we finished winning nearly every game. The team was growing together. Now, you listen to people and it is as though if we don’t buy players, we will lose every game.

“I want United to be back winning again. I like Ole and the way he works. I am not saying he is the best manager in the world but he is doing his job in a way it used to be done before.

“I know a lot of supporters will not agree with me about this but people need to know that Ole does not want to kill Manchester United. He wants to buy players but in the right way.

"He does not want to buy just for buying’s sake, like we did for five or six years.”
