The transfer chase is on at Old Trafford after Manchester United finished as Premier League runners-up last season, but the club is already experiencing difficulties in its recruitment.
Euro 2020 has complicated matters as many players look to concentrate on international affairs, possibly delaying the Red Devils in their efforts to add more star talent this summer.
Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish is expected to be subject of a bidding war between United and rivals Manchester City in what could be one of England’s biggest summer deals.
United’s defence and midfield are the more pressing areas addressed in the latest rumours, however – and Daily Star Sport has dissected today’s gossip highlights…
Trippier ‘closes door’ on United
Soon after it emerged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have revived their interest in Kieran Trippier, reports in Spain have suggested the Atletico Madrid defender has already rejected their advance.
That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, which reported Trippier has ‘closed the door’ on an Old Trafford transfer after the Red Devils previously made an approach for the player this past winter.
Should Man United target another right-back this summer? Let us know in the comments section.
The 30-year-old—who is contracted in Madrid until 2023—is on his way to Euro 2020 after helping Atletico win La Liga this past season, with neither Trippier nor Diego Simeone eager to see him leave this summer.
Solskjaer is settled with Aaron Wan-Bissaka as his right-back of choice, but it’s been suggested United could look to add competition for the role.
Torres happy at Villarreal
Speaking of targets prepared to remain in their Spanish settings, Pau Torres is another who looks unlikely to join Solskjaer’s ranks this summer.
Torres, 24, has spent almost his entire career in his native Villarreal and was a prominent part of the team that defeated United on penalties to lift the Europa League title in May.
Rather than leave Unai Emery’s side, the centre-back indicated he’s eager to venture into the Champions League with his boyhood club: “Right now I have a contract with Villarreal. We’ve won a European trophy. We’ve shown we can compete against any opponent.
"Next year we have the Champions League ahead of us, and that’s what I’m focused on. Those rumours mean that you’re doing a good job. I’m calm.
"Those rumours came out a while ago and I don’t think my performance has changed, it’s been good.”
United missed crocked captain Harry Maguire in the Europa League decider, highlighting the club’s need for another top-class central defender.

A breakthrough campaign at the Camp Nou may not be enough to earn Ilaix Moriba the contract extension he desires following reports Barcelona won’t meet the teenager’s demands.
Moriba recorded his senior debut in January and went on to make 18 appearances for Ronald Koeman’s side in total, 14 of which were in La Liga.
The 18-year-old midfielder—who has earned comparisons to United star Paul Pogba—is set to enter the final year of his current contract in Catalonia.
Most clubs would be eager to extend terms with such a talent, but RAC1 reported Barca are unhappy with Moriba’s demands following a change of agent.
Moriba was formerly represented by Stellar Group—whose clients include Chelsea duo Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell, as well as Villa star Grealish—but switched to Rogon earlier this year.
Mundo Deportivo reported in March that United had made a ‘firm offer’ to sign Moriba, who could be put up for sale this summer if he doesn’t lower his salary expectations.
