Ernesto Valverde and Manchester United have spoken about the vacant interim manager position at the club, with it thought that his experience in handling big names is a huge factor for the Premier League side wanting to sound him out.
The 57-year-old’s last position was Barcelona manager, which he did from May 2017 until January 2020. During his tenure, he won the La Liga twice and a Copa del Rey.
The Guardian reports that Valverde – who is out of work – has spoken with John Murtough, United’s football director, about taking over at Old Trafford until the end of the season.
It is thought that Valverde’s experience in working with superstar Lionel Messi would mean he would be capable of managing the big-name players at United, such as Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Spaniard is wasting no time and has already started his hunt for potential players he could bring to the club in January should he get the role.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday after United slumped to a woeful loss to Watford, losing 4-0 at Vicarage Road.
Michael Carrick has been appointed as the caretaker, with the club wanting to bring in an interim until the conclusion of the season and thereafter hire a permanent boss for the following campaign.

Valverde is understood to be one of five candidates that United have on the list for the interim role – but they are ready to pull the plug on bringing in a temporary manager if Mauricio Pochettino agrees to join from Paris Saint-Germain now.
The report also says that Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers is another manager who is a possible target for the permanent position, the club regarding him as a similar calibre to the Argentine.
Valverde was asked in an interview for the Observer in June about one day potentially working in England. “Could be,” the Spaniard said. “I wouldn’t mind trying it. You get the feeling that there’s a respect there for what the game is.”
