Man Utd news LIVE: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set to be axed as the Glazers start manager search

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to be sacked over the coming hours after his position at Manchester United became untenable following a 4-1 drubbing against relegation battlers Watford. United called an emergency board meeting last night to discuss their next move and have reportedly come to the decision to axe Solskjaer, with the Glazers signing off on it.

The Norwegian boss is set to receive a £7.5m pay-off, having signed a three-year contract back in the summer.

United owners the Glazers will now begin their search for his replacement, with reports claiming a permanent successor is unlikely to be appointed until the summer.

Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick have both been tipped to step in as interim bosses while United go through the process of finding their next boss.

Zinedine Zidane and Brendan Rodgers have both been heavily linked with the job in recent months but are not expected to take over immediatedly.

  • Man Utd to go for Zidane

Manchester United owners are reportedly ready to launch a new and improved bid to land Zinedine Zidane as manager.

Any approach will have to wait until the summer because Zidane is not ready yet to return to management.

However, it will have to be a good one to tempt Zidane, with the Frenchman eyeing up the France national team job.

Didier Deschamps is currently in charge but his deal expires at the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

    Fletcher to step in

Darren Fletcher is a frontrunner to replace Solskjaer at the helm on an interim basis as the Glazers look for a permanent successor.

Fletcher, who currently works as the Red Devils’ technical director, is expected to be assisted by Solskjaer’s current right-hand man Michael Carrick.
