Manchester United have told Ousmane Dembele their plan to sign him from Barcelona this summer. The Red Devils have been interested in the Frenchman for some time, though failed in their pursuit of him last summer.

But now they have a new plan to finally secure their man, as they look to strengthen their options on the right wing.

United targeted Dembele and Jadon Sancho last summer, with the right wing position one of the main weaknesses in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

Dembele emerged as a target after impressing for Stade Rennais and Borussia Dortmund, though he has struggled for form and fitness at Barcelona.

That has seen him record just 20 assists in four seasons at the Nou Camp, though he has been revitalised under Ronald Koeman this term.

The Dutch manager has utilised Dembele in a 3-5-2 system in recent matches, allowing him to use his speed up-front alongside Lionel Messi, without handing him defensive responsibilities.

In a remarkable turnaround from last season, when injury limited him to just five La Liga outings, Dembele has been involved in 22 of Barca’s 28 top-flight matches this season, scoring four goals.

Despite his inconsistency, United attempted to sign Dembele last year, but Barca were able to extend his contract to July 2022.

But that has not curtailed the Red Devils’ interest in the Frenchman, and they have now revealed their plans to finally bring him to Old Trafford.

And the Red Devils have now told Dembele that they are willing to make Barcelona a transfer offer this summer, or if that fails, they will wait until his contract expires and sign him on a free transfer.

But they face a fight from Barca, who remain keen to further extend his contract to keep him in Spain’s second city.

Koeman is reported to be ‘very satisfied’ with the forward and considers him a key part of both his current side and his future plans.

Sport also report that new club president Joan Laporta, elected to lead the club at the start of March, has made it a priority to begin negotiations and hopes to seal a new deal in the coming weeks.

But the Spanish giants remain in financial trouble, which presents a major obstacle to Laporta’s hopes of reaching an agreement.

Dembele appears to have the upper hand in negotiations, with his salary demands remaining high, despite his club’s money issues.

If a new contract is not agreed before the summer, Sport report that Barca may be forced to sell Dembele in the upcoming window to ensure he does not leave for free next year.
