Manchester United have been told they “misjudged” their transfer pursuit of Jadon Sancho this summer though a deal is not dead in the water for the Borussia Dortmund ace.

United were heavily linked with a move for the England star though missed a deadline from Dortmund while also being reluctant to pay the £108m fee that the Bundesliga giants wanted.

There is still a belief that the Red Devils will go in for Sancho again, either in January or next summer.

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has suggested that United be smarter about their business following a difficult transfer window though has hinted that a deal for Sancho could still be done.

Without mentioning United by name, he said: “[They] misjudged the situation. We had a clear line and will continue to do so next summer.

“In this industry, you can never say that a player is completely unsellable.

“I heard and read everywhere in the spring that Sancho was gone. But he's here. We had an agreement with him.”

Having failed to secure a deal for Sancho, United were left scrambling around on transfer deadline day.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made four signings as the window closed and was rewarded with a 4-1 win over Newcastle in the first game after the market.

Solskjaer said: “We have so many games coming up and you pick a team that you think is going to get a result in that game.

“You look at the opposition and you look at yourself and what is the best balance and I thought we found the right one today.

“There were some very good performances from the ones who came in since last time and the ones who came off the bench did really well.

“The ones who stayed on the bench as well – they were our supporters tonight so there was a great attitude and team spirit.”
