Manchester United supporters barely had anything to cheer as their team was outclassed and embarrassed by rivals Manchester City in a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side conceded early on courtesy of a calamitous Eric Bailly own-goal in the seventh minute and never looked in control after that.
City began to dominate by passing the ball from left to right as United’s players had little luck in dispossessing their more organised counterparts.
Bernardo Silva eventually made the away side’s relentless pressure pay with a goal before half-time as the Old Trafford faithful were silenced by another abysmal display from their team.
But aside from the boos and jeers which rung around the stadium, one moment that appeared to lift Man United fans’ spirits was Donny van de Beek’s substitution in the 79th minute.
The Dutchman received rapturous applause and a standing ovation as he was brought on for Fred with just over ten minutes to play, having had his name chanted from as early as 50 minutes in while on the bench.
Van de Beek was unable to change the course of the match but the fan reaction to his cameo was hugely telling, both in terms of the support for the midfielder and the lack of trust in their manager Solskjaer.
Solskjaer’s treatment of van de Beek has been a talking point among Red Devils supporters and pundits over the past two seasons, with the former Ajax man yet to start a league match this season.

His £35million transfer fee has been called a waste of resources but with the limited opportunities van de Beek has been given on the pitch, fans have been more critical of Solskjaer and the club hierarchy than the player.
United supporters have also taken to Twitter to voice their support for the player, with one saying: “We just want him to have a fair chance. Can’t do any worse then the rest. Shambles”
Another added: “How he’s been treated is disgraceful!”
A third fan commented on his reception: “Thank god! Atleast he knows the fans love him!”
