Manchester United are ‘determined’ to sign Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves this month, but interim manager Ralf Rangnick could have other ideas, according to reports. The Red Devils are ready to back Rangnick with a midfield signing in the January transfer window, but he could target names more familiar to him from his homeland of Germany.

On Monday, Neves was one of Wolves’ standout players in their 1-0 win at Old Trafford and has been heavily linked with a switch since the summer.

But the 24-year-old has consistently outperformed United’s current defensive midfielders this season.

He has made more passes under pressure, passes into the final third, progressive passes, and won more tackles than all of Rangnick’s current options.

But the German coach could pass on the opportunity to secure his services and upgrade his options this month.

According to The Sun, United could make an offer worth £35million to sign Neves before the January 31 deadline, but Wolves will demand in excess of £40m.

Despite the club’s interest, there are concerns among figures that Rangnick would rather target a Bundesliga midfielder.

After spending most of his coaching career in his homeland, he has extensive knowledge of German football.

And the top-flight is a division he trusts for talent to improve United’s midfield ahead of the remainder of the season.

Reports from Germany have touted RB Leipzig star Amadou Haidara as one of Rangnick’s first transfer targets at United.

Sources even suggest the 63-year-old has already spoken to Haidara’s agent Volker Struth.

The Malian midfielder has previously expressed his desire to join United in the future, naming current number seven Cristiano Ronaldo as one of his idols.

But with a Premier League-proven player in Neves seemingly available, it feels like an opportunity Rangnick simply can’t refuse.

Wolves manager Bruno Lage will be desperate to keep hold of Neves and maintain his Portuguese midfield partnership with Joao Moutinho.

However, Lage has admitted Neves is looking for a new challenge in an encouraging statement for United and his other suitors.

He said: “It’s not about a contract or money. It’s about creating a big team that fights for different things.

“Ruben is in that place where he needs a different challenge. And we also want a different challenge for the club. We want to push younger guys, like Ruben, to the next level.”
