Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick needs to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka to get the best out of Cristiano Ronaldo, according to former Aston Villa captain Gabriel Agbonlahor. Ronaldo has scored eight goals in 16 Premier League appearances since his return to United. But Agbonlahor believes that tally would be higher with better service from right-back.

Wan-Bissaka is yet to register an assist in his 20 appearances in the Premier League and Champions League this season.

Diogo Dalot, who has stepped in for Wan-Bissaka on occasion, is also yet to assist this term.

Agbonlahor believes Ronaldo will be frustrated at the poor service he is receiving from that side of the pitch.

And he cannot understand why United have not targeted Kieran Trippier, who is set to undergo a medical at Newcastle today ahead of an initial £12million move from Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils wanted to sign Trippier last summer but baulked at Atletico’s asking price.

“When I watch Manchester United, I don’t know if you agree, Ronaldo must be so frustrated from the right-hand side,” Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT.

“I love Wan-Bissaka defensively but he can’t cross a ball.

“There was an incident [against Wolves] where he actually tapped the ball with his left foot and fell over and crossed it out of play.

“He’s just not good enough for Manchester United’s service.

“The thing I don’t understand is why have Manchester United let Trippier go to Newcastle? He would be perfect for Manchester United.

“Just get it done. For that sort of money, £12m, I’m sure Manchester United can pay the wages that Newcastle can.

“Put him on the right-hand side, imagine the goals that Ronaldo and [Edinson] Cavani would get from that service.

“Wan-Bissaka is not a modern-day full-back, especially in a top team.

“So for me Manchester United have missed a trick with Trippier.”

Wan-Bissaka missed the early games under interim boss Ralf Rangnick due to injury but has been reinstated into the side ahead of Dalot.

United legend Rio Ferdinand expressed his concerns about Wan-Bissaka during his spell out of the side.

“I’ve got to be honest, Wan-Bissaka has got a hell of a job getting back in this team. The same for Luke Shaw,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport in early December.

“They’ve both got one hell of a job. One thing this manager likes is full-backs who can actually play and get on the ball.

“As well as doing the other stuff like pressing, he wants output with the ball. That’s the weakest part of Wan-Bissaka’s game, there’s going to be a big fight for him to get back into this team.”
