Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains how Bruno Fernandes has impressed him

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hailed Bruno Fernandes, with the Norwegian comparing their January signing to Old Trafford hero Paul Scholes. The Red Devils signed Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon in January after lengthy transfer talks.

The Portugal international has impressed since heading to Old Trafford, with Fernandes setting up Harry Maguire in United’s 2-0 win at Chelsea on Monday night.

And Solskjaer has hailed Fernandes’ impact, claiming his drive and leadership qualities have impressed him.

“He’s another conductor, a leader and winner. He wants to win, He doesn’t take 99 per cent as good enough and he’s impressed me,” Solskjaer said.

“That’s something you see when you watch him but you don’t really know about until you have him in your group. He’s been absolutely top class.

“He reminds me of Scholesy as a player but definitely a different type of personality off the pitch.”

Fernandes was a substitute for United’s draw at Club Brugge in the Europa League this week.

However, Solskjaer says the midfielder was helping out his team-mates despite not being in the starting XI.

“[On Thursday] when he’s on the bench, he walks around, he speaks to the players who start, he helps them, he gives them points,” he added.

“I’ve been very impressed by him. And the 10 minutes he played you could say that there’s a difference in our team.”

United hero Jaap Stam has also compared Fernandes to Scholes – but not when it comes to being without the ball.

“I think Fernandes is a bit similar to Scholesy,” Stam told 888sport.

“He’s always looking to play forward.

“He’s got the ability to score. He’s got a great free-kick. He’s got a great pass.

“He is always looking to get into certain areas to get onto the ball and be influential in the game.

“He’s not exactly the same. Scholesy was a bit more aggressive without the ball.

“But in football intelligence he is similar to Paul Scholes.”

United are back in action on Sunday against Watford in the Premier League.
