Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag ‘targeting fourth Ajax reunion’ in £35m deal

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is keen on a reunion with former Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana at Old Trafford this summer, according to reports in Italy. The Dutchman could now seek to complete the next phase of ‘getting the old band back together’ in the Premier League having already signed Antony and Lisandro Martinez from the Eredivisie champions last summer following his appointment.

The South American duo were among Ten Hag’s first signings after replacing Ralf Rangnick and he was also reunited with former Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek upon arrival in the North West.

Now Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy are reporting that Ten Hag wants to sign Onana from Inter Milan this summer and in their view, a deal is very much viable.

It’s claimed the Cameroon international is valued at around £35million despite only joining the club last summer.

Onana, who was handed a nine-month ban after testing positive for banned substance Furosemide during Ten Hag’s time in Holland, is known for his stop-stopping and technical ability with his feet.

With Inter still struggling financially, Onana represents the chance to raise some cash should the club receive a suitable offer this summer.

Although United are still in talk with David de Gea over a new contract, it’s believed Onana would be his long-term replacement at Old Trafford.

The former Ajax goalkeeper is used to competition having already forced his way ahead of Samir Handanovic in the Inter pecking order.

United’s goalkeeping department has become one of the few burning issues Ten Hag needs to address in the summer transfer window.

While De Gea has shown improvements, he is still susceptible to an error and that is something United want to eradicate.

A number of other goalkeepers including David Raya, Diogo Costa, Emiliano Martinez and Yassine Bounou have already been linked with moves to Old Trafford.

But it appears Ten Hag’s previous relationship with the player could swing the balance should he wish to push ahead with a transfer.

Speaking to Sky Sports, De Gea has made it clear his focus is on finishing the season strongly as he looks to avoid the outside noise.

“I’ve been here many many years, enjoying every moment in this club playing many games,” De Gea said.

“Of course it’s great to be here, it’s a massive club and I love the club and I’m really happy here of course.

“It’s been the same over the years, there’s a lot of noise around the club but players just focus on games, especially the one we have one Sunday – a massive game for us because we want to finish in the top four.

“Like I say, we have many many games so I think we have to be really really caring about training, recovering well, helping the team and that’s the most important thing, more than contracts or anything.”
