Manchester United’s players had a chair thrown at them as they celebrated Diogo Dalot’s stunning goal during their 2-1 victory against Sheffield United on Saturday night.

Erik ten Hag’s side their second successive Premier League win after Scott McTominay and Dalot both scored to help the Red Devils seal the victory at Bramall Lane.

The Scotland international would open the scoring in the 28th minute, only for the Blades to hit back through an Oli McBurnie penalty not long after.

But it was United who took the spoils, with Dalot striking a sensational effort from outside the penalty area before wheeling away to celebrate with his teammates but the goal was marred by an unsavoury incident.

As the players gathered around the goalscorer on the touchline to celebrate his wonder-strike, a chair can be seen to be thrown by someone in the crowd towards the Man United playing cohort on Sky Sports’ coverage of the match.

Fortunately the chair didn’t make contact with any of the players and it is unclear who threw the object, but football fans were quick to point the incident out online.

‘Good grief, what a finish by Dalot,’ one wrote. ‘I know it’s been a frustrating season for Sheffield United, but a fan throwing his chair toward the field in disgust is aggressive.’

Another added: ‘Cool but someone have a word with the last few frames of that clip – did someone try and throw a chair at them???’

The victory comes after Man United’s turbulent start to the season, with Ten Hag’s side going to eighth in the Premier League standings having won five and lost four of their opening games.

Yesterday, United were also without Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with the trio all currently out of action with injuries.

And speaking on the game, their Dutch manager admitted his side had to fight for the win after going in at the break level against the Blades.

Some took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their bewilderment at the incident

The result puts Erik ten Hag’s side eighth in the Premier League after a difficult start to the season

Scott McTominay also continued his fine scoring run, netting the opener for United

‘The first half was not our game. We made it their game,’ he said in his post-match press confrenece.

‘Opportune, direct. We made it too direct instead of keeping the ball, passing it round. Keeping them working. We were also very direct and then we lost control of the game.

‘They shouldn’t score, especially in such moments and that has to give confidence and take the ball and let the opponent run. We made some corrections at half-time and I think after half-time it was more the side we want to see.’

United are back in action this week as they welcome FC Copenhagen to Old Trafford in the Champions League.
