Manchester United are planning talks with Edinson Cavani to decide if the Uruguay striker will stay at Old Trafford next season.

United signed Cavani as a free agent in October on a one-year contract with the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

The 34-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli star is emerging as United’s first-choice striker despite scoring only seven goals in 24 appearances for the club.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also been impressed by Cavani’s professionalism which he believes has rubbed off on younger players like Mason Greenwood.

It seems likely that United will offer to extend the South American’s contract, but Solskjaer says that will be determined by talks with his representatives before the end of the season.

United like to resolve contract issues by the end of March, with Juan Mata another of the senior players whose future is up in the air.

Asked about Cavani, Solskjaer said: ‘I can only say Edinson has done well. I’ve been impressed by him, he’s really gelled in the group and we’ll sit down and speak with him in the near future to see his plans and our plans.

‘It’s a good discussion to have. We always speak to the players and, with his contract situation at the moment, we’re very pleased with what he’s done.’

Cavani missed the Europa League win over Real Sociedad in Turin on Thursday with a muscle injury and will have a late fitness test to see if he can return against Newcastle on Sunday.
