Manchester City have been urged to switch their attentions to a transfer for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang having appeared to reach a stand-still in their pursuit for Harry Kane.
Pep Guardiola is desperate to sign a new striker having lost Sergio Aguero to Barcelona earlier this summer.
It didn't affect City too much as they thrashed Norwich 5-0 on Saturday, though a move for Kane is still believed to be in the pipeline.
Reports suggest the reigning Premier League champions are still £50million off Tottenham's valuation for the England star.
And Charlie Nicholas believes City should instead make a move for Arsenal ace Aubameyang amid reports the Gabon ace wants to leave the Emirates.
"They could go for someone like Aubameyang," Nicholas said.
"It looks like something is going wrong at Arsenal at the moment, and we do know Aubameyang scores goals. He’s got pace, and he’s got movement
"I prefer him on the left, but I could see something like that materialise. It gives Manchester City a cheaper option.
"He’s not as good as Kane, but he’s as good a finisher as Kane."
Kane is yet to play for Tottenham this season after an extended summer break though is in the squad for Sunday's clash with Wolves.
Aubameyang has also been absent so far this campaign having previously tested positive for Covid.
Spurs manager Nuno Espirito Santo has declined to be drawn on Kane's future and said in pre-match comments: "He trained today. He trained good. He will train tomorrow [Saturday] and tomorrow we will make a decision."
"I'm so sorry to keep saying the same things but this is how we work. It's a day by day situation."
