Harry Maguire is battling to play again this season after the Manchester United captain suffered a knee injury.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick revealed that Maguire has joined United’s lengthening injury list and will miss Thursday’s game at home to Chelsea – leaving him with just 14 fit outfield players.

‘Harry Maguire is not available tomorrow, he has some issues with his knee,’ said Rangnick.

Maguire was left on the bench for United’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday

‘Not a big thing, a niggle with his knee. He didn’t train yesterday nor today.’

However Sportsmail understands that Maguire’s injury could sideline him for several weeks, keeping him out of United’s final four games.

It would complete a fitting end to a miserable season for the England defender who has faced criticism over his form and questions over his suitability to be United captain.

It came to a head last week when the 29-year-old’s agent reportedly received an email threatening to blow up his family home if he did not leave the club in 72 hours.

Police sniffer dogs checked the luxury property in Cheshire and security has been stepped up while Maguire’s fiancée Fern and two young daughters stayed at a safe house.

Maguire was dropped to the bench for Saturday’s defeat at Arsenal when Rangnick preferred to play Victor Lindelof alongside Rapahel Varane in central defence.

His future at Old Trafford will come under scrutiny this summer just three years after a £80million move from Leicester with new manager Erik ten Hag targeting a new centre-back.
