Liverpool set to announce Thiago transfer today as star to complete medical on Merseyside

Liverpool are set to announce the signing of Thiago Alcantara later today after the Spanish midfielder completed a medical on Merseyside. According to the Daily Mirror, Thiago flew to Liverpool on Thursday night for the second part of his medical examinations, and signed the final details of his contract while he was there.

Liverpool have finally got their man, and will today announce they have signed Jurgen Klopp’s top transfer target.

The Reds have been after Thiago all summer after he told Bayern Munich he wanted to leave – regardless of the outcome of the Champions League.

He ended up playing a starring role as Bayern won their sixth European cup in Portugal, and he was named man-of-the-match in the final against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Bavarians initially set a £34million valuation for the 29-year-old, but were forced to lower their expectations as it emerged no team would meet that price.

Manchester United were interested, but refused to meet Thiago’s £200,000-per-week wage demands.

However, Liverpool were able to negotiate with Bayern and get the transfer fee down to just £20m, with another £5m to be paid in additional payments.

Thiago has wanted to play for Klopp since the beginning of the window, and is believed to have told his Bayern team-mates that Liverpool was his desired destination.

Klopp, too, was keen on the move and reportedly gave Anfield chiefs the green light to pursue the deal earlier in the summer.

Now, the deal is done, with the announcement set to be made later today.

Crucially for Liverpool’s ownership group, they will reportedly only pay £5m up front, with the rest to be paid in installments over the coming four years.

The deal is unlikely to be processed in time for Thiago to make his debut against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, however.

If Klopp chooses, he could give the Spaniard his first taste of English football against Lincoln away from home in the EFL Cup next week.

But it seems most likely he will make his debut against Arsenal on September 28 in his first Premier League fixture.

However, former Chelsea player Craig Burley has warned that he won’t be able to immediately jump into the starting line-up, telling ESPN FC that he believes the Champions League winner can’t expect to start straight away.

He said: “It’s not just a case of chucking a Jordan Henderson or Georginio Wijnaldum out of the side.

“He’s going to have to fight for his place.”
