Liverpool negotiations mean Thiago Alcantara will only cost them £5m this year

Liverpool will only pay an initial £5million to sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich this summer, with the rest coming in yearly instalments.

Thiago is on the verge of finally securing a move to Anfield, having been linked with the Premier League champions throughout the summer.

Daily Star Sport understands Liverpool and Bayern are confident a £25million deal will be reached swiftly, coming as a blow to other potential suitors Manchester United.

Reports suggest United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently held talks with Thiago, yet the midfielder’s wage demands were proving a stumbling block.

Now he is expected to put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Liverpool, who The Mirror claim will only be forking out an initial £5million to sign him.

Bayern have agreed for Thiago’s transfer fee to be paid in increments over the course of a four-year contract, which the Reds were keen on due to financial concerns amid the coronavirus crisis.

They will therefore cough up just £5million this year, before paying another £20million over the next four years.

Thiago has just under a year remaining on his current Bayern contract, and after agreeing a new deal with the German giants in May he eventually decided against signing it because of his desire for a new challenge.

It is believed the Spain international wants to work with Jurgen Klopp, whose pressure on Liverpool chiefs to get the deal over the line proved crucial.

He will wear the No.6 shirt on Merseyside, which he currently dons for Bayern, after Dejan Lovren vacated it to join Zenit St Petersburg earlier this summer.
