Liverpool need to follow Sir Alex Ferguson’s example in the transfer market as Joe Cole identifies the “perfect” target for Jurgen Klopp. While the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea all splashed big money on bolstering their squad this past summer, Liverpool focused on trimming down theirs.
Georginio Wijnaldum was the most high-profile player to leave Liverpool, along with the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Harry Wilson and Marko Grujic.
The money accumulated from player sales and loan departures comes close to the £36million fee paid to sign Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.
Bringing in another top-class centre-back option following last season’s injury crisis was the No 1 priority.
But many were left surprised that Liverpool didn’t follow in the footsteps of their rivals by improving further up the pitch.

Liverpool have repeatedly stated that they can’t compete with the richest clubs in Europe, particularly following the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Harvey Elliott was trusted to become Wijnaldum’s replacement and impressed at the start of the season before his heartbreaking injury against Leeds.
Klopp does have four world-class options in the forward positions and Mohamed Salah is arguably up there as one of the best players in Europe at this moment in time.
Having that kind of firepower will help any team mount a serious title challenge.
But history suggests that teams need to continually evolve by adding fresh faces to give them the best chance of repeated success.
United icon Sir Alex would regularly dip into the market to bring in the best players at Old Trafford and that helped establish them as the most successful club in England.
And Cole, who joined Liverpool in 2010 before leaving in 2013, believes Klopp needs to follow a similar pattern.
The German head coach has been reluctant to change much of the side which won the Champions League in 2019.
But Cole believes Juventus star Federico Chiesa would be the ideal addition to Klopp’s squad.
“It was an indifferent summer for Liverpool,” he told Coral.
“I was surprised they didn’t go out and bring in a superstar.
“Like what Sir Alex Ferguson used to do when they would win trophies.
“They’d go again and double down, they’d bring someone in who might sort of ruffle feathers.
“Someone like Chiesa is an absolute perfect player from Juventus for Liverpool, the way he plays.”
