Liverpool in talks with Juventus over loan move for Arthur Melo

Liverpool close in on shock loan move for Juventus misfit Arthur Melo, after making an approach after midnight… with the midfielder seen as a similar style option to Thiago Alcantara

  • Jordan Henderson was latest midfielder added to Liverpool’s injury list
  • Thiago and Naby Keita remain on the sidelines and resources are stretched
  • Move for Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo has come out of the blue
  • Talks with Juventus are over loan and 26-year-old is travelling to Merseyside

Liverpool are talking to Juventus about a shock loan deal for Brazilian Arthur Melo, who is travelling to Merseyside.

The 26-year-old, formerly of Barcelona, has had enquiries from Wolves and Sporting Lisbon in recent days. Valencia had made enquiries earlier this month.

The Brazilian is a deep lying playmaker and the Reds are keen on providing cover in the centre of the pitch given their huge injury problems.

Arthur Melo is nearing a loan move to Liverpool and is keen to play for Jurgen Klopp

Melo is a busy midfielder and Klopp is keen to bring in players to cope with the injury crisis

Melo has emerged as a late target and Jurgen Klopp’s side are looking to push through a deadline day move having made contact after midnight.

He is fully fit, very keen to work with Jurgen Klopp and believes Liverpool’s style is one that suits him best – better than that of Massimiliano Allegri at Juventus.

The 26-year-old has been encouraged by the success of Thiago in the Premier League and is seen as a similar type of player, perhaps without the same craftsmanship as the Spaniard.

Melo signed for Barcelona in 2018, joining on a six-year contract from Gremio but moved to Juventus as part of a swap for Miralem Pjanic two years later.

Since then, he’s played just over 40 times for Juventus and scored one goal for the Italian giants.

He is yet to make an appearance for Allegri’s side this term and seen as surplus to requirements in Turin.

Thiago, Naby Keita and now Jordan Henderson are currently out injured along with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain so options in midfield for Klopp are reduced.

Melo has struggled for game time under Massimiliano Allegri and is eager for a change

Henderson is to undergo a scan on his hamstring today having come off against Newcastle.

The Reds face Merseyside rivals Everton in the derby this weekend and could parachute Melo into the mix straight away.

Liverpool are buoyed by their last-minute win over Newcastle on Wednesday night, while the Toffees are still looking for their first victory of the season.

It will be fascinating to see where Klopp fits Melo in if he signs, especially with Harvey Elliott in such fine form and Curtis Jones returning from injury.
