Roberto Firmino will play in the No.10 role for Liverpool in their clash with Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp has chosen to put the Brazilian and in-form Diogo Jota in his starting XI at the Etihad.

As a result, summer signing Jota will be deployed up front instead of the Reds’ normal frontman.

Firmino will figure in the playmaker role ahead of Liverpool’s two-man midfield of captain Jordan Henderson and Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum.

It’s a bold call from Klopp, with fans and pundits having been debating all week if Jota or Firmino should start.

The Reds manager has ultimately gambled in going with both, which arguably leaves his midfield somewhat exposed against a tough City team.

Pep Guardiola has a three-man midfield of Rodri, Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane take up their usual roles on the right and left of Liverpool’s attack respectively.

Liverpool are subsequently expected to flip between a 4-3-3 set up with Firmino at the front of the midfield behind Jota, as well as 4-2-3-1 with Salah and Mane dropping back slightly when needed.

Klopp’s selection has been seen before, however, in the 2-1 win at home to Sheffield United in October.

That time, they set up against the Premier League’s bottom team with Salah occupying a more central role.

Firmino was behind him linking the play, but it was Jota and Mane cutting in from the flanks.
